Things to do in Ilfracombe and beyond

Out and About

Local Area Information

Situated on the North Devon coast, Ilfracombe is positioned directly on the South West Coastal path, and has some of the most spectacular cliff scenery in Britain.

With its selection of restaurants, pubs and shops, the charm of Ilfracombe’s working harbour and quay offers a tranquil setting for your enjoyment during your stay.  Verity, Damien Hirst's work of art and the UK's largest bronze statue at 20 metres, has now been erected in all her glory at the end of the harbour for all to see.

Ilfracombe is perfectly located, providing easy access to many places, including the beautiful Exmoor National Park, fabulous local beaches such as Woolacombe, Croyde and Putsborough, and pretty villages such as Lynton and Lynmouth, Bideford, Clovelly and Appledore.

We invite you to come and see Ilfracombe for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.  The local tourist information centre website (www.visitilfracombe.co.uk) is full of useful information.

Activities and Places to Visit

There is so much to see and do around Ilfracombe, we thought we would list just a few things to tempt you.

For the sports conscious, you are spoilt for choice.

Ilfracombe Tennis club is just across the road from Wildercombe House, located in the beautiful Bicclescombe Park.  Clay pigeon shooting and the local bowls club are also on offer.

If you are an avid golfer, Ilfracombe Golf Club (www.ilfracombegolfclub.com) set high above and overlooking the Bristol Channel, is a course you simply must try.  You could also sample the Saunton Golf Club (www.sauntongolf.co.uk), the Willingcott Valley Golf Club (www.willingcottgolf.co.uk) located in the nearby village of Woolacombe, or perhaps the Royal North Devon Golf Club (www.royalnorthdevongolfclub.co.uk).

If walking’s your thing, you can explore the nearby Cairn Nature Reserve, located directly behind Wildercombe House (http://www.tour-devon.com/ilfracombe/cairn.htm), walk along the coastal paths, or explore the Tarka Trail, either on foot or bicycle.  Don’t worry if you haven’t brought your bike, they can be hired locally.  Visit www.walkingnorthdevon.co.uk for more information.

Horse-riding is readily available in the area, with the nearest riding stables, Mullacott Equestrian Centre (www.mullacott.co.uk) only half a mile from Wildercombe House, where they also offer the chance to try out their Quad bikes.

Ilfracombe’s harbour provides the perfect opportunity to take a cruise and explore the coastline; why not charter a boat for sea fishing or deep sea diving, or take a trip to Lundy Island, a place of outstanding natural beauty?

We are very fortunate to have two theatres close by, the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe, and the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple.  Offering a varied programme of dance, comedy, and drama to name but a few, check out www.northdevontheatres.org.uk to see what’s on during your stay with us.

If you like visiting National Trust properties, Arlington Trust (www.nationaltrust.org.uk/arlington-courtis only 7 miles from Ilfracombe.
